U.S. and Israel: Tempers Flare over Iran

Steven LeBlanc

Tempers flared again between Washington and the Prime Minister of Israel. The issue of disagreement revolves around the comment by Benjamin Netanyahu that America needs to set a “red line” regarding Iran. Mrs. Clinton representing the Obama Administration, responded by saying, We’re not setting deadlines for Iran and stated that negotiations are the best way to resolve the situation.

Benjamin Netanyahu response to Mrs. Clinton was quick and determined: “If Iran knows that there’s no deadline, what will it do? Exactly what it’s doing: It’s continuing without any interference toward obtaining nuclear weapons capability and from there nuclear bombs,” he said. “The world tells Israel: Wait. There’s still time. And I say: Wait for what? Wait until when? Those in the international community who refuse to put red lines before Iran don’t have a moral right to place a red light before Israel.”

It increasingly looks as if American support for Israel against Iran is thinning. Some in Israel are saying that it may be a repeat of the stress Israel experienced before the 6- day war of 1967; Israel received little support from America and was told by the Johnson White House that if Israel attacked Egypt, it would suffer the consequences without the involvement of the U.S. Israel had to go it alone then, as it may need to do so with today’s challenge against Iran.

The tiny little nation of Israel faces a sea of hate and is surrounded by enemies that include—Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Egypt, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Al Qaeda, an Hezbollah. A cool response from Washington leaves Israel as having to face its enemies alone.

Psalm 83 reveals that before Christ returns a multi-nation Islamic force will seek to destroy Israel—cutting off the nation from being a nation (verse 4). What we are seeing today is a hatred of Israel that is intensifying throughout many regions of the world:

See how your enemies growl,
how your foes rear their heads.
3 With cunning they conspire against your people;
they plot against those you cherish.
4 “Come,” they say, “let us destroy them as a nation,
so that Israel’s name is remembered no more.”
5 With one mind they plot together;
they form an alliance against you—
6 the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites,
of Moab and the Hagrites,
7 Byblos, Ammon and Amalek,
Philistia, with the people of Tyre.
8 Even Assyria has joined them
to reinforce Lot’s descendants
