Suicide rates in the US have risen steeply

I was both discouraged and shocked to hear of the latest statistics regarding suicide.  I often hear interviews on this subject on the radio and other media also covers this subject as well; depression is also a front-burner discussion topic.  Both are on the rise across all age groups, especially those who are under 40 years of age.  We are seeing a tragic increase in mental illness in our nation.  But this is what happens when you have a breakdown of marriage and the family unit, when the Commandments of God are cast aside or ignored mental depression flourishes.

The rate of U.S. teens and young adults dying of suicide has reached its highest level in nearly two decades, according to a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association.  Between 2009 and 2017, rates of depression among kids ages 14 to 17 increased by more than 60%, the study found. The increases were nearly as steep among those ages 12 to 13 (47%) and 18 to 21 (46%), and rates generally doubled among those ages 20 to 21.

With more than 6,200 suicides among people aged 15 to 24, suicide ranked as the second-leading cause of death for people in that age group, following behind are deaths from chance motor vehicle accidents.

For youths, using social media in a way that reduces face-to-face interactions could be particularly detrimental to mental health, said Victor Schwartz, chief medical officer at suicide prevention nonprofit The Jed Foundation.  Personal friendships that are long lasting are increasingly difficult to find.  Social media is shallow, fast and lacks that eye to eye, face to face contact. We reap what we sow—casual sex, live-in relationships, rampant divorce—these behaviors are destroying our people’s mental health—and our children, teens and young people are suffering the most from this pandemonium.

Hebrews 12:4—states that Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.  The only hope of turning our National depression crisis around fast is to quickly, and vigorously, restore our Nation’s respect for God’s divinely created covenant relationship called marriage.
